SHGs Making Association in Tamil Nadu to provide sanitary pads at free of cost

To enhance the women self help group in the state, the Tamil Nadu Sanitary Napkin Makers have launched a new association. In this federation or association there will be women self help groups who will manufacture and distribute sanitary pads free of cost. The initiative was taken to promote hygiene during women menstruation.

Launch Details

The association was launched officially on Wednesday 27th Dec 2017. The federation was launched at Annai Theresa Mahalir Valagam, Tamil Nadu. Additional Chief Secretary, Hans Raj Verma has stated that quality of the sanitary napkins will be maintained so that women can get hygienic products for use.

Key features

  • Need for the federation: The federation was needed to push the SHGs further so that they can increase their income as well as the need for women hygiene and use of sanitary napkins would promote.
  • SHG under this federation: Total 52 Self Help groups will serve under this federation. All of them will be involved in manufacturing sanitary napkins.
  • Benefits: Nearly 47 Lac pads will be manufactured and distributed. The SHGs will sell the pads to the federation and later on the federation will distribute the packets to other places for free.
  • Price: Price of the napkins will be set at Rs. 21/- per pack. However the women in need will not be required to pay for it. The federation is planning to distribute the same in schools as well very soon.
  • Quality and Hygiene: Quality and hygiene will be maintained, as said by Verma. Also each pack will have an instruction part where it would be written about usage, process and other precautions before using the napkins.
  • Other states: Before Tamil Nadu. Maharashtra State has taken kind of same initiative where women SHGs offer sanitary napkins to the school kids at Rs. 5/- per pack. However hospitals and prisons were excluded from the initiative. Also under National Health Mission, to promote the hygiene during menstruation, this kind of initiative has been taken by the central government.

Generally in Tamil Nadu, through private companies manufacturing and distribution of sanitary pad is taken place. Every year nearly Rs. 10 Cr has been spent in distributing sanitary pads free of costs. This initiative will give more exposure to cleanliness and hygiene during women’s menstruation and safe disposal of them as well. This federation will be a way of enhancing income generation of the self help groups in the state.
